There's a lot of privilige in that statement, just a heads up. For a lot of Americans, yeah, politics appeared more civil, but they were getting harmed all the same, by people like McCain.

If we tolerate evil simply because it occasionally does something that benefits us, we are complicit in that evil.

this is basically taking the position that we shouldn't ever negotiate or attempt to find consensus with those we disagree with (because it makes us "complicit in evil"). this is where resistance ends and radicalism begins.

i think we just differ in that regard. that's not how i am. and it's not just privilege of separation, either. if any of the people that had been targeting me and my family did something good, i would still acknowledge it.

There is a difference between feeling sympathy for John McCain the man, respecting John McCain the soldier, and respecting John McCain the politician. I will never be in the latter, but I think the former is quite reasonable.
