I'm not arguing for a "unified narrative of the true events of the past." I'm saying, based on everything that I've studied, biased in all directions that it might be, that there is a consistent, overarching theme that shines through, no matter the bias.

And that theme is, "human beings, with rare exception, prioritize those close to them first, those who agree with them second (sometimes first), and could give fuck-all about everyone else." It's a shitty view, but it's what's there.

I wish it were different. I *want* it to be different, and I'll do everything in my own power to make it different, but that's what I've seen, both historically, and personally. All I can control are my own actions, and the choices I make.

You're holding the fundamental sinful nature of man as an object of faith.

Sin's got nothing to do with it. Self-interest is what you're looking for, and that's baked in from the get-go.

I dunno how to argue against you if you don't think the perpetuation of the species isn't one of the driving forces of literally everything alive.

there is a wide gulf between "perpetuation of the species" and "barring outliers, everyone is fundamentally self-interested" and you haven't bridged that other than a vague handwave at history

Fine. Concrete example from literally today. A study found that those more invested on Facebook in their community were statistically more likely to attack outsiders.http://nymag.com/selectall/2018/08/new-study-high-facebook-usage-linked-to-violence.html …

I can spend tomorrow digging up cases from history if you want, and I will, but this is not new behavior.
