I think this might be a key misunderstanding. I'm not saying that human nature is immutable. I'm saying that it is historically *consistent*, absent the will to recognize and change that behavior.

And it is our choice (heavily influenced by underlying societal factors, of course), to either continue that consistency, or do something different. Most people choose the consistency. Again, I don't see how this can be argued against the historical record.

The exceptions that occur throughout history. The emperor that does the unpopular thing because it's what's best for the empire. The general who doesn't sacrifice all the troops, even though that's the prevailing wisdom. The rare glimpses of humanity amidst the chaos.

you are claiming superiority over the dumb people who also worked with what they have, who could not access ideas which had not yet been conceived, or had higher ideals we had not yet discarded

They had access to history as well. One could even argue they had more access than we did, being closer to the source.

Most annoying thing about an ancient text is when it references something we have no other record of than the reference to it in this text, as if the reader is expected to already be intimately familiar with it. Well, it is pretty much like modern text.

Just wait until future historians start trying to figure out what "Rickrolling" is after the Internet explodes.
