and i haven't even touched the idea that maybe the current understanding isn't even the best one we've ever had, let alone ever will have

My personal definition of "history" is "access to the knowledge of those who came before you," for what it's worth.

And granted, yes, that was likely less widespread in the days before the printing press (not to mention the internet), but the fact remains that even in the Roman empire they were referencing accounts of those who came before.

the contemporary ideal of "history," a best-understanding objective account of past events, is not as old as the roman empire

I would argue that's taking away from the intellectual capacity of those living prior to the idea of history. There have always been those who questioned the propaganda, who thought "maybe the world over the hill *isn't* ghosts and demons". Their accounts may not have made it.

i don't think you're getting it the idea of a unified narrative of the true events of the past, that was a particular invention. we even have a decent idea of when it happened, and it was thousands of years after the invention of writing

I'm not arguing for a "unified narrative of the true events of the past." I'm saying, based on everything that I've studied, biased in all directions that it might be, that there is a consistent, overarching theme that shines through, no matter the bias.

And that theme is, "human beings, with rare exception, prioritize those close to them first, those who agree with them second (sometimes first), and could give fuck-all about everyone else." It's a shitty view, but it's what's there.

I wish it were different. I *want* it to be different, and I'll do everything in my own power to make it different, but that's what I've seen, both historically, and personally. All I can control are my own actions, and the choices I make.

And that's why every choice I make is to flip the bird to those who say "it's always been this way, and it'll always be this way." We *can* be better, but only if we want to be, and understand why it's important. That takes a conscious effort, though.
