after two catastrophic wars over nationalism and self-determination, after wwii germany was divided more or less arbitrarily

I disagree that it was hindsight bias. Alexander proved that rebuilding the vanquished worked back in 330ish BC (sadly he didn't live long enough to make it stick).

I do agree that stupid mistakes were made in dividing Germany (and other regions, i.e. Palestine/Israel) which have led to many of our current problems, but again, those were avoidable by anyone who cared to look.

dividing germany was also, however, based on a well founded diplomatic principle of status quo ante bellum, offering legitimacy to the post-war situation that did not lead to apocalyptic nuclear war

Depends on what timeframe you view the world in. As far as WWII contemporaries? Absolutely the right move - none of them will see/saw a nuclear war. As far as the rest of us? Jury's still out. Signs aren't looking good.

that's my point. the jury was out at the yalta conference. the jury was out at versailles. our understanding of the past does not grant clairvoyance into the future.

Sure it does. We know if Trump proposes any sort of armed conflict to distract from his troubles at home (which he is likely to do, North Korea being the obvious target with the recent reports that they aren't complying with nuclear de-escalation)

we should immediately see it as the self-serving ploy it is, and deny it, no matter the violence his base proposes, because to wait will simply make that violence worse.

so should Trump oppose Russian aggression in Ukraine, if it somehow escalates?

Yes, but in a measured, ally-building way that demonstrates the rest of the world has no time for this nonsense, which he won't (and can't, to be honest at this point) do.
