Any solid dive into the historical record shows multiple occasions of actions for short term gains, with little to no regard as to the long term consequences (and not just militarily speaking)
Depends on what timeframe you view the world in. As far as WWII contemporaries? Absolutely the right move - none of them will see/saw a nuclear war. As far as the rest of us? Jury's still out. Signs aren't looking good.

that's my point. the jury was out at the yalta conference. the jury was out at versailles. our understanding of the past does not grant clairvoyance into the future.

Sure it does. We know if Trump proposes any sort of armed conflict to distract from his troubles at home (which he is likely to do, North Korea being the obvious target with the recent reports that they aren't complying with nuclear de-escalation)
