Throughout history, many (if not most) conflicts leading to large scale casualties have been driven/led by people unable to differentiate between their ass and a hole in the ground.https://twitter.com/LevelTwoRogue/status/1032054825821847552 …

Shit, half the Crusades were "Let's go march into a desert without any supply lines." The War of the Roses was a clowncar of poorly formed and broken alliances. WWI was essentially "Welp, guess it's time to go a murderin,' there's no way this will spiral out of control."

the crusades were not generally characterized by a lack of managed supply or support by the standard of the wars of the time, and often as not were not in any sense in the desert

the idea of world war i as a comedy of errors and not a consequence of empires fighting to maintain their existence against both each other and the rise of self-determination and nationalism isn't a settled point outside of middle school social studies classes

I consider "not understanding the ramifications of all of your treaties going off at once" to be stupidity.

this presents the sides as much more static than they initially were, when the initial belligerents were aggressors or opportunists

it also presents the alliances as ahistorically ironclad; italy joined the war against its allies, and romania's involvement was not a forevone conclusion

on top of this, there was the problem that most of these alliances were secret - and not all of them were honored in the end

Sorry, was at soccer practice for the kids. I would say that that proves my initial point - there was no evil genius or Machiavellian mastermind necessary, just dumb people doing dumb things (that historically had likely outcomes)
