Nah, on a goal kick (or any sort of free kick) you want to play a short pass so that way you maintain possession. Blasting it up-field looks neat, but it's a terrible way to play soccer. I attended Seattle v Vancouver, and thought technical standard was good, but was shocked at the lack of appreciation as to what balls to play to stretch the defence. Even obvious passes amateur teams I have played in would have known to play

A result of other national sports being incredibly structured perhaps? Thinking NFL and baseball predominantly, not sure of organisational links between the three though.

I believe it's primarily more due to the fact that the US doesn't have a de-facto soccer authority, like other countries, but rather a loose umbrella of organizations all somewhat interconnected. Tough to teach a consistent standard with that setup.
