Nah, on a goal kick (or any sort of free kick) you want to play a short pass so that way you maintain possession. Blasting it up-field looks neat, but it's a terrible way to play soccer. Yeah, I think that's the biggest indictment of US soccer, in that we have such a vast talent pool to draw from, we should be much better than we are. Coaching makes a big difference

I actually think they need to address youth development less intensely. Let them play and develop feel for space and how to react to movement around you. Remove the shackles and stop coaching people to be robots.

That's also a good point, and something AYSO is trying to address (though it's not being adopted very well). They've been telling coaches to coach during practice, but not to scream out constant instruction during the game, otherwise players never learn to think.
