I don't have a smoker, otherwise I would definitely give that a shot. I've done the reverse sear method before too, works really well.

As someone with both the smoker and the sous vide, all of those suggestions are on point for the tri-tip. But the finished product probably isn't too far off from what you're currently doing. It's just a little more foolproof.
