One is saying "Hey, you're being an asshole, please change. If you change, we'll probably be cool." The other is saying "Hey, you were an asshole once, we're going to try and ruin you for eternity if you cross us." I know which side I'm on.

(Now granted, context and nuance is important, as some asshole lines are unfixable once crossed, and others may take a very long time, but the idea is always rehabilitation instead of retribution)
