Has any Nea DNA been found in the cave sediment of these caves and Chauvet/Lascaux? Besides testing of mineral film.

I think we can see what they did, but do we know what they were doing? Is marking objects (something many animals do) always artistic expression? When the gas or water guy marks and locates pipes in the street with spray paint does it mean anything more than "this is here"?

Maybe 'this is here' in terms of special places and times IS meaningful and symbolic...

Sapiens copying & embellishing Neandertals paintings is very attractive! They could have developped the works with a higher level of symbolism, unknown for Neandertals. Sue Savage Rumbaugh's bonobos are able to recognize and even reproduce symbols but that remains weak symbolism

Neanderthals teaching Homo Sapiens art ? I love this kind of thinking. Why not ? Why some scientists are seemingly so elitist to not consider this type of thinking worries me. Thx Chris !!

It seems to me that if Neanderthals made cave drawings, they must´ve had a word/name for the animals they were depicting as well, since the word came first and then the drawing I guess.

The distinction between weak and strong symbolism is from the psychiatrist and philosopher Arnaud Plagnol.

Neandertals exposing modern humans to cave art? That's a wonderful theory. I don't believe there is older cave/rock art in Africa prior to the migration out or the dating of this cave art. Can anybody confirm this?

Having read Lewis-Williams and Von Petzingers work on cave art, I thought that art was a natural and spontaneous creation of the human mind/brain. So artistic expression would have happened independantly and not have to have been taught to HS by HN. Or vice versa it seems
