The best part of recording Space Oddity for me was the joy it gave David Bowie, to see his creation performed in a place he'd always dreamt of.

Here I explain 14 years ago that drought in the Mediterranean results from our fossil CO2 emissions, in a lecture in Malaga (Spain). That was well-established robust science even back then in 2009. Nobody should be surprised by it now.

Spain in megadrought. Out of 55 hottest temperatures ever recorded in #Spain - only ~5 were recorded before 2020. 2024 looks set to be even hotter than 2023 with El Niño on the way. This is the new climate - one that will push civilization to the limit.

In fact Eunice Foote en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_Ne is credited with the first realisation that atmospheric greenhouse gases warm the planet!
Quote Tweet
It is:
- more than 200 years since Fourier first made the analogy that the atmosphere behaves like a greenhouse
- more than 150 years since Foote & Tyndall identified the main greenhouse gases
- 85 years since Callendar showed the planet was warming & caused by increases in CO₂

March 2023 was globally the second warmest March since 1880, +1.21°C and +1.48°C above the 1951-1980 and 1880-1920 March means, respectively.
An El Niño is going to start soon.

The surface of the ocean is now so hot it's broken every record since satellite measurements began
This not only fuels more powerful storms but impacts Marine life where native organisms cannot tolerate such extremes

I’m very aware there’s huge numbers of people who don’t accept that we are in a climate crisis. I have some in my family, such has been the power of the fossil fuels disinformation campaign. Good chance they’ll change their minds by the end of the year…

This is the brutal truth about what needs to happen to have any chance of staying below 1.5C
The idea that we can do this 'without the hair shirts' - as our last PM but one suggested - is pure BS.

‘Headed off the charts’: world’s ocean surface temperature hits record high | Oceans | The Guardian

Ocean surface temperatures have never been this hot in recorded history. It shouldn’t be happening. Yet the media wont report it. They’ll report football scores and celebrity trials and new film releases more prominently. The entire media is totally broken.

I don’t think people understand that media, politics and society will be unrecognisably change by this and it’s almost time. It’s unlike any issue because the planet doesn’t care a jot about your view or beliefs or what politicians think is possible. An awe inspiring time to live

We require a 75-80% reduction in material well-being in the affluent west. Subsistence farming in a unstable climate anyone?

This is the highly accurate graph for global heating produced in 1982, for internal use, by scientists
They knew the scale of the problem and instead of acting they lied, obfuscated and paid others to deny global heating and climate breakdown were happening
