        It gets it from http://fwupd.org , which @hughsient wrote to give all hw vendors and distros a common place to go for it.

        Well, distros could certainly package the firmware blobs, but it leads to downloading a big pile of stuff that's mostly irrelevant to you.

        News to me! I was running Arch on my XPS13. Had to install Win10 to update my BT and USBC drivers even though it shipped with Ubuntu.

        You need to install fwupd and fwupdate but even then I've never been able to get this to work. I'm probably doing something wrong...

        That's cpu microcode, not system firmware. Which just means the update is in a different thing. On RH distros it's in intel-mucrocode IIRC.

        Well, not an ubuntu person myself, but I don't think he's right, and other distros have non firmware based fix AIUI.

        DELL it's doing but not for everything, to update the USB-C to HDMI/VGA/Eth adaptor you still need Windows

        In addition to supporting LVFS, Dell also allows custmrs to update BIOS in pre-OS environmnt. Hit F12 during POST, select BIOS Flash Update
