The idea that ordinary German citizens would take up arms against the Nazis when the French and British didn't (Munich) seems far-fetched; the far better defense against tyranny is strong & independent institutions, and an informed populace.

There's an irony here in that the cities like NYC where I live that have stronger regulations on gun ownership are also the nation's primary bulwarks against tyranny. Today's tyrants don't worry about armed citizens, they worry about independent media and free elections.

Independent media and free elections are and should always be our primary go-to as civilized people. An armed citizenry is a backstop designed with the wisdom and foresight that the existence and proper functioning of those institutions can be hoped for, but never guaranteed.
