The Alberta government wants climate activists like me out of schools, but they want to be clear that they're not against teaching climate science Thought I would help out by compiling some of what scientists have been saying lately:

In my latest column, I attempt to draw a connection between the UCP's view of education as job creation and its anti-climate justice crusade. A special shoutout to the great for chatting with me about this.

Green Drinks is coming up next week! We'll be using a speed dating format to help you connect with a bunch of different groups doing work related to the climate crisis. Great way to get involved in the climate movement and decide where to volunteer!

  4. Talked with for his latest column. Give it a read! "Gusen is being demonized for encouraging students to think about the long-term interests of society at large and be responsible citizens, which is precisely education’s intrinsic value."

Middle aged former Republican in Council Bluffs, when asked why he doesn't support mentions as his FIRST reason!! His house flooded last year, he states that scientists all believe, " wouldn't steer us wrong." THIS. IS. HUGE!!

it's exhausting that a & are nowhere to be found in all these conversations around Teck. Communities all over the province are hurting NOW and boondoggles like Teck & TMX are the only sol'ns our governments are entertaining

Any talk of approving Teck Frontier completely ignores the realities of carbon emissions already coming from Alberta's oilsands. Hand-waving about future technology won't cut it.

A year ago, I was not an activist. I was a public servant struggling to reconcile a growing awareness of the climate emergency with doing a job where even mentioning climate change felt taboo I think a lot of people feel that way, especially in Alberta Let's break the silence.

Climate science isn’t just an “important topic,” as the UCP put it in the press release that singled me out Climate scientists are calling for all of us to become activists & organizers, no matter how strange that feels It's time to take collective action & demand a real plan.

57 U.S. climate scientists just co-signed a letter to Bernie Sanders about his plan: “Not only does your Green New Deal follow the IPCC’s timeline for action, but the solutions you are proposing ... are realistic, necessary, & backed by science.”

    4. Scientists say we need a Green New Deal These scientists write that the GND "comprehends the magnitude of the climate threat humanity faces, & we see it as a sign of realism — not radicalism — that the problem is viewed in its totality & with urgency”

The study found "that the keywords 'climate action' and 'climate emergency' were generally not searched for in the past, but their use increased 20-fold in 2019." They attributed these trends to the youth-led climate movement that's been surging in size & visibility since 2018.

    3. Scientists say protest and civil disobedience works Conservatives are keen to paint the climate movement as marginal & protest as ineffective In fact, there’s strong evidence that the rapidly growing movement is making a huge difference. Join us!

Several Alberta scientists added their names to the 11,000 and I’m sure they’d be willing to give class talks if it’s determined that activists like me aren’t qualified.

    2. Scientists say it's an emergency More than 11,000 (!) scientists based in 153 countries co-signed a report warning that the planet, "clearly and unequivocally faces a climate emergency." They endorsed policies like switching to renewable energy ASAP

If LaGrange doesn't believe scientists, she might believe the World Bank CEO who, in 2018, said “We're clearly the last generation that can change the course of climate change, but we are also the first generation with its consequences” Is the World Bank too radical for the UCP?

LaGrange worried recently about, "children being taught that they are the final generation to deal with climate change.” Well, according to the world's best climate scientists, we've got 10 years to make sure those kids don’t come of age in a world spiralling into climate chaos.

    1. Scientists say we're running out of time One of the big moments that motivated me to join the movement was the October 2018 report by the on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. This article is a good overview.

It's an indefensible position for the UCP. Even if they sent a scientist to every school in Alberta, they’d be saying the same thing as people like me: we’re in a & we need decisive action. is keen on climate science, so here are some examples

The UCP knows it’s no longer socially acceptable to be an out-in-the-open climate science denier. Now they're attempting a difficult tightrope walk in their messaging. On one side: bash activists like me. On the other: say they accept climate science and do want it taught.
