Doesn’t the AFTS actually trigger when it poses a threat to people? If the rocket isn’t thrusting and just falls down to the sea then there shouldn’t be any reason to activate AFTS. Blowing the rocket up may actually be worse, you go from one piece to multiple ones...
Per the AFTS, because the engines are shutting down (thrust termination), the AFTS is not expected to blow the F9. And Benji believes that would be true of a regular F9 if it encountered an engine shutdown failure in flight. #IFA #InFlightAbort #SpaceX #Falcon9 #Dragon

My guess is there is a good chance of it staying intact until water impact. It depends on if the tanks maintain pressurization and how much tumble is induced.

Thrust termination is a valid function of AFTS. That is, an AFTS can detect an off-nominal that causes it to activate, so the AFTS terminates the thrust of the engines. Explosive destruction of the launch vehicle is not the only method of terminating a flight.
