I’ve just finished my last day at Oracle Labs - I’m moving to because I think it’s going to be the place to do the best Ruby research going forward.

I've just realised that I've never charged the Beats bluetooth headphones that I got for free from Apple months ago. I use them every day. Not sure how this battery is working?!

Is anyone interested in a blog post about how I think military planning applies to software? I think the military approach has useful tools that people in software don't know about. I get a lot of negative push back when I talk about military things so I'm cautious.

Am I using Zsh wrong? It seems to think I'm writing things for it to do something with when I write what are in Bash just normal commands. What am I doing wrong here?

What does the tag mean on a GitHub commit? It's not the earliest tag to include the commit. Is it the latest? How's that useful? I want to know which release a commit went into. Obviously it's in all subsequent releases so what's the point in showing the latest.

Turns out my five-year-old daughter has no idea what a mouse is. She's proficient with a touchpad and touchscreen but school asked her to use a mouse and she'd never seen one!

The Ruby ISO draft used to be publicly available from but it seems to be permanently gone. Does anyone know where you can get it now? It's an important historical document. Hard to navigate the site without Japanese, even using translation tools.

Funny when you watch a North American just cut a hole into the wall in their home with a hand saw and run a cable! Their walls are completely hollow! Makes their entire walls into one massive whole-house cable conduit!

I'm experimenting with prop of time spent in compiled code (temp, or temperature here) as a metric for how optimised an application is. Allows warmup to be compared for two systems that have different peak performance (KIPS, or kilo-iters-per-second here).

If I want to have a Java agent that runs a callback every time a particular method is called, and get access to the arguments, but don't want to be working with bytecode myself directly, is there a library for that?

Every time someone suggests that graphical programming would be a great idea I think about how hard it is to read a compiler graph with even simple logic.

Debugging some Ruby code here with its own class called Class and it's rather difficult to get my head around because of that. Also has a class called Instance where Class is an Instance. It's a whole parallel object model.
