I like this. Really, we can have our own opinions, but check our own sources and research our positions so we don't fall into fallacies

Yes, agreed! Opinions are personal and valuable, but policy is public and must be shaped around fact.

I am of the opinion that tuna fish is awful, but it's not right for me to use that opinion to campaign to outlaw all tuna fish.

IMO this is why science education is so important. It is an essential part of my training as a biologist to respond to facts over bias.

And formal logic! We need to teach students early on to stop, look @ what they're hearing, & say "hold on, this doesn't quite work."
