The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award can give, and I had the honor of congratulating new recipients at the yesterday. They come from all walks of life, but all have worked to more fully realize the American Promise. Here are a few:

If had only recovered from an unspeakable act of violence committed while meeting with her constituents, it would have been enough. That she has gone on to be a national voice on gun violence prevention is nothing short of a miracle.

When we passed the largest gun safety and mental health bill in a generation last month, it was in large part because of her tireless efforts (and, her husband is a pretty decent coworker).
Lastly, John McCain was a force in the Senate for America’s role in the world, a decorated veteran, a model of integrity, and my friend and mentor. I was so glad to be able to congratulate my friend Amb. as she accepted a well-deserved Medal of Freedom on his behalf.
