  3. The International Coastal Cleanup began in 1986 with 2,800 volunteers recovering 124 tons of trash in Texas. Last year, nearly 800,000 volunteers combed lakes, rivers and beaches in 106 countries across the globe to collect over 10,000 tons of trash.
