As a Patriots fan it still crushes my soul to watch that play. But I remember watching the game with my (late) father-in-law, longtime Giants fan, and it was worth it to see him smile.

Exciting new paper by Max and Po-Ru Loh on mosaic CNV—present in some cells but not all—in autism. Turns out they are really big and are never the CNV’s (like 16p) that cause autism when present in all cells.

Mark Daly: "When you start data mining in the genomic vaults, there’s no telling what solutions you may uncover. There are tremendous opportunities to boost national healthcare, starting with better means to predict disease".

Who would have thought that sodium channels would do stuff in developing progenitors and neurons when they don’t even fire action potentials?

Delighted to see our work on de novo mutations in schizophrenia out today in + our results integrated into the paper by et al. below. Open science for the win! Special thanks to the contributing families in Taiwan, whose genetic data made this work possible

Totally. I spend 80% of my time granting on the figures and specific aims page. Once the aims page is perfect, the rest of the grant just writes itself. As a reviewer, if aims page is confusing or lacks clarity, it’s an uphill battle to slog through the rest...

We find granzyme positive CD8 T cells next to degenerating neurons in hippocampi of Alzheimer’s patients. A smoking gun and a dead body but more work will be needed to prove that that gun killed the neuron. More here and here

Best chalk talks I’ve heard had 3 parts. The main (~65% of the allotted time) focused on the immediate R01 plan (years 1-3), second (~25%) on ‘the next step’ question (years 2-5) and the last (~10%) on a ‘big question/dream’ (years 5-10). Good luck to all those interviewing!
