    This semester I'm teaching a new PhD course "Economics, AI, and Optimization." I'll be covering how AI/Opt methods enable large-scale economic solution concepts. I'm planning to share lectures notes that I hope will be of broader interest.

    Starting to put up YouTube lectures for "TCS Toolkit", a new course for PhD and advanced undergrad students with an interest in Theoretical Computer Science (TCS). Idea is to go over fundamental math and CS topics needed for basic research in TCS.

    How to make yourself feel stupid with math: spend three days trying to prove a thing. Then, wake up on a nice sunny Sunday morning and realize that there's a blindingly simple counterexample 🤦 ... At least the counterexample still goes in the paper.

    These pitfalls all seem obvious on their own, but taken together it's an impressive number of ways that one can stumble when making predictions.

    Information leakage in financial machine learning research. There is almost nothing about this (apart from universe selection) that is specific to stock prices. It's an excellent read even if you don't do financial stuff.

    As a new professor I found this very inspiring.

    This beautiful meditation on the academic tradition of letters of recommendation also reveals why "going to college" is ideally a transformative experience, one that cannot be had online and is inherently resistant to "efficiency": college is a place of becoming. h/t
