  1. Well, well, well. Children of immigrants in the UK who speak English as an additional language getting higher grades in English than native speakers. (And in math, by the way.)

  2. Texas State Senator Craig Washington (D–Houston) on 6 July 1989. For some reason, this brilliant quote seems particularly relevant today.

Dear Fellow Men: If a female journalist sends a tweet saying she’s getting death and rape threats on social media, do you think you can — just one time — put your clearly massive insecurities on hold and not send a comment back to her that might generate more harassment?

  5. New York Times announces that it has 3.5 million digital-only subscriptions for its core news products, and 5 million overall. I wonder what % of those 3.5m digital subscribers are located outside the US?

  6. Mitt Romney insulted by Trump, but still tolerated his candidacy and was silent during his Presidency. Romney in same camp as Fox News stars who make millions pushing bigotry, then leave and are lauded as “heroes” because they “dared” to declare that something awful was awful.

  7. The Trumpification of the Boris Johnson regime gathers steam... First: banning selected reporters from press briefings. Next: having random, unqualified family members start to act like members of the government.

How bullshit works: Take vague stat. Add Muslims. Stir. Roughly 7500 kids born in Gothenburg in 2019. Assuming near-equal gender split, that's 3750 boys. A total of 43 boys were named Mohamed. "1% of boys born in Gothenburg in 2019 named Mohamed" isn't quite the same, is it?

  10. Hot mot kvinnliga journalister mycket, mycket stort problem.

  11. Another important thing about Mohamed being the 2nd most common name for boys in Gothenburg: it's there because it is such a incredibly common name for Muslim boys. There are no equivalent names on the list for girls, showing that it's not about there being "so many Muslims."

  13. Usual hysteria about names that says nothing. Mohamed (and variant spellings) extremely common name for Muslim boys, meaning high % of all Muslim boys have that name, pushing it up lists. It ranks 29th in all of Sweden, and it's the only "Muslim" name in top 80 nationally.

  14. Finland's new govt to give all parents same parental leave, in push to get fathers to spend more time with their children. Finland says it wants to "promote well-being and gender equality."

  15. 25% of people in the UK are “bothered” when they hear people in the UK speaking another language. Number is 41% for Leave voters. I’d like to introduce them to British “expats” in Spain.

The BBC wrongly identified a black female Labour MP, then the Evening Standard wrote a story about the BBC mistake and used a photo of a *different* wrong black female Labour MP, now the Standard is blaming major photo agency Getty Images who they say *also* made that mistake.

Very pleased to see "far right" and "nativist" used in this headline and article, rather than "populist"

Future of mediated "populism": * Hand-picked journalists at briefings * Few press conferences * Avoid debates * Cream-puff interviews w/sympathetic outlets * Bypass mainstream news via social media * Leverage support from hard/far-right sites * Disinformation OK, no retractions
