That Berkeley has declared a climate emergency yet has shut down zero streets to cars, has built zero new bike lanes, had made no new bus priority lanes, has had a major transit-oriented housing project fall through, is making me very skeptical of these pointless declarations.

Sweden is full of forests and commuting to work in town is a joy when there are separated bike paths the whole way. Major road junction in Uppsala has 3 underpasses for bikes and pedestrians.

Separated infrastructure for active mobility reduces stress and encourages social behaviour. Don't believe me? Take it from the badger.

On Market St this PM, every light cycle was basically a mob of 2-3 dozen people on bikes surrounding each car still illegally driving on Market St

Taking public transit should feel like one seamless experience. Unfortunately, it doesn't feel that way now. Today I am announcing w/ a bill to move towards more intuitive, convenient & reliable public transportation in the Bay Area.

After visiting Barcelona last month, I am convinced that should look at the Rambla del Poblenou as an example for Valencia Street. It has a wide pedestrian path in the center flanked by single-lane service roads that can only be used by delivery vehicles and bicycles.

This is the impunity of perpetrators of planet destruction. How on Earth feels safe to label its operations 'low CO2'? Ryanair emissions went up 50% in just 5 years, making it to the infamous top 10 polluters list in Europe.

Bay Area’s refusal to build housing has created a massive # of super-commuters. Big Bay Area employers now send shuttles to Central Valley to bring people to work, starting 2:30 am. This isn’t sustainable. We must stop exporting our housing obligations.

Utrecht has revealed plans for Merwede, a 24-hectare site that will be a completely car-free neighborhood—with access to shared vehicles. It will house 12,000 residents, with almost everything—including Centraal Station—within walking or cycling distance:

“A lot of people point to the cost of a rail system as the excuse not to do it,” he said. “They advocate for wider roads and other short-sighted fixes, but the truth is we pay massive amounts to subsidize car travel and don't even know it.”

In the 20th century, being "modern" meant bringing cars into the center of cities. In the 21st century, it means keeping them out. (Photos: Piazza Maggiore, )

This sucks. Every bus stop in this town ought to have the minimum dignity of not forcing riders to wait in the street to be seen just to preserve a parking space.

Scary bicycle tunnels, we don’t like them in the Netherlands. That's why we cheer our tunnels up with art! My latest post:

What's the impact of low-traffic neighbourhoods on air-pollution.....It's an almost instant borough-wide reduction in NOX. Each blue shows harmful levels of exposure.

I've been saying for years: the first thing any transit provider should try if they want to boost ridership is simply to increase frequency to 12 minutes or better. No free fares, no modeling, no redesign. Just increase frequency for three months!
