Month two of @HuffPost Opinion is almost done. This month we published: 63% women, inc. trans women; 53% writers of colour.

Our goals for this month were: less than 50% white authors (check!), Asian representation that matches or exceeds the US population (check!), more trans and non-binary authors (check, but I want to do better).

We also wanted to raise Latinx representation to match or exceed the US population. We didn't achieve that goal, but we're moving firmly in the right direction.

Making the improvements we made took work, no doubt about it. We all tapped our networks and made moves to expand our collective rolodex.

I check our numbers at the end of every week, because it's easy to lose track or imagine you're doing better than you really are, and the numbers don't lie.

(The numbers also don't tell the whole story -- about disability, geography, socioeconomics and more).

But the work is not onerous and it's definitely not impossible. If we can do it, every other opinion page can do it, too.

Your goal for the month: Segregate authors instead of posting articles based on merit: Check! Treat people as members of their race/sexuality instead of all being equal humans: Check! Continue the deterioration of race relations in America: Check! You SHOULD want to do better.

As a Latina I would hate to know that the reason for being picked was to fill a quota and not based on merit.

Why are you paying so much attention to race and particular groups? Shouldn't these things be based on merit and not skin color or sexual or gender preferences? Strange cause to champion...what makes sense and is fair is Equal opportunity not equal outcome.
