Our goals for this month were: less than 50% white authors (check!), Asian representation that matches or exceeds the US population (check!), more trans and non-binary authors (check, but I want to do better).

We also wanted to raise Latinx representation to match or exceed the US population. We didn't achieve that goal, but we're moving firmly in the right direction.

Making the improvements we made took work, no doubt about it. We all tapped our networks and made moves to expand our collective rolodex.

I check our numbers at the end of every week, because it's easy to lose track or imagine you're doing better than you really are, and the numbers don't lie.

(The numbers also don't tell the whole story -- about disability, geography, socioeconomics and more).

But the work is not onerous and it's definitely not impossible. If we can do it, every other opinion page can do it, too.

And if you have an oped to pitch, here's how you can do that. We pay, we edit with care and we are anti-Oxford commahttps://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/how-to-pitch-huffpost-opinion-personal_us_5a5e0726e4b0fcbc3a1388f0?section=us_opinion …

Why not just have good authors? Why the need to specify who these authours are. An Asian author is still an author. Don’t need to include their race. A trans author is just an author, like the rest and not a “trans” author.
-
But without effort to reach out to underrepresented groups, they tend to get ignored. It's not about hiring unqualified authors; it's about making the effort to seek out good authors of all types.
-
Best authors hired, showcased. Period. What they are should be secondary to their work. Not, we hired so and so because they fit this quota and we need 50% representation. They’re now getting attention for who they are and not their work.
-
They are going back in time, to when people had to disguise themselves with pen names, just to get published. Haha real progressive..

Sounds like some genders, orientations, and races were under represented.
-
Sounds like giving someone a job based on their skin color or sexual orientation instead of merit

I agree

I looked at yours and all I saw was a bunch of crying. Join the armed forces, go see some 3rd world countries, fight for your country, then get back with me.
