Minister @GregHands is laying out the government's opposition to Lord Alton's original amendment, saying "this would in effect take prerogative powers out of the hands of government." He is not commenting on the new Commons amendment above.

Iain Duncan Smith sets out the case for Amendment 3: It "offers a sound legal basis to engage in obligations under genocide convention...this is not anti-China but this is anti-genocide".

Liam Fox speaking against the amendment: "I believe the High Court of Parliament is the appropriate place, and I believe Parliament can apply sanctions on where it believes they are justified."

Chair of the CRG @TomTugendhat in support of the amendment: "Genocide tries to do something that no other crime attempts: it tries to end history... it tries to remove an entire people, an entire culture, from our world. It's an erasure of life unlike every other crime."

Foreign Affairs Spokesperson @LaylaMoran says that the Lib Dems will vote in favour of human rights: "The triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing... nothing is exactly what happens, and it's time to change this."

In favour - @Tobias_Ellwood set to vote for the amendment; states importance of attracting US support, not allowing China to take advantage of 'wobbly' international rules-based order: "I encourage my government to take the moral high ground. It should be our default position."

@Nus_Ghani: "Today is Britain's moment to blaze a trail and showcase global leadership on trade and international law... we can uphold our UN obligations and ensure that we do not trade with genocidal states, or we can do nothing. And to do nothing is a council of despair."

CRG member @AndrewBowie_MP opposes: "I have faith that the executive will do the right thing and that, if the day comes that it does not, this house will hold them to account. That is how parliamentary democracy works. We do not offload nor do we subcontract our moral compass."
