Our Land Use Report in 11 tweets. This report was *particularly* challenging, because land is a fixed resource. There are hard choices. The scenario is compliant, with policy recommendations to drive it. This is ‘the minimum’ required. We must get cracking.

I think I speak for most friendly independent climate advisory bodies when I say I’d like to see this business sorted out sharpish. It’s very important that the UK is brilliant in the presidency and that Scotland is brilliant as the host for this summit.

Short thread as stranded assets go mainstream in the Lex column today. The key point is that it is not just a question of the volumes that get strandded, but the lower price you get for the residual volumes you are still able to sell under a given carbon budget. 1/n

3 key changes in today's announcement: - full switch of new sales by 2035 not 2040 - zero means zero: no hybrids - could be earlier subject to consultation (right to do so given genuine challenge in scaling up supply from current 3%, but industry must be pushed hard)

“an end to the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans to 2035, or earlier if a faster transition is feasible” Cars are typically on UK roads for 14 years so 2035 is in line with Net Zero 2050 are gathering evidence now on even earlier date

Really good summary of the economics of fossil fuels and stranded assets without carbon capture. (Behind a paywall )

We received a letter from Number 10 - and it’s a *good* letter. Hoping this is a primer for further announcements from the PM tomorrow...

Ten personal thoughts on the presidency/process, drawing on observations and lessons learned from the past 10+ years or so of following the COP process in various guises (government; adviser; researcher), beginning in the run-up to Copenhagen in early 2009:

Really useful threat summarising the complex challange of land use change. Helpful briefing by in cardiff today. Struck by the pace in which change will be necessary.

Good roundtable discussion this morning with on the implications of this report for Scotland. Lots of focus on joining up decisions, spreading benefit and opportunity fairly and realising economic opportunity
