One consequence of which is that it has formed a massive plank of both 1) alliances between reactionary parts of the feminist and LGBT movements with the religious right wing who were more than happy to help collapse both 2) resources and support in the right wing press for this
Outside of the bubble of extreme evangelicals, it turns out other people who have adopted this conspiracy theory (now evolved into the idea of a marauding SJW feminist movement destroying all of human sexuality for the sake of woke points) are much more able to take it and run.

Someone posted pointing out that Dale O'Leary was "just a Catholic blogger", which is quite false. She was sent by the church to the 1995 Beijing women's summit to report on proceedings. Her book is the result of her horror at Butler's theory being discussed there specifically.
It took a while for the conspiracy theory to get mainstream support in the church but by the mid 2010s the Pope is writing books on the subject. It's not meaningful to suggest that O'Leary is irrelevant here, nor that this theory didn't have a big pull on the church.pic.twitter.com/BUHm5oRWp3
