If you watch/read any talks on digital intelligence they basically all spend a lot of time focusing on how to reduce the harm to your brain from soaking it in stress hormones from content you are spending a lot of time looking at.

Common tips include: 1) Get lots of breaks, hydrate 2) minimise your contact with the content 3) if you can avoid it, try to minimise your sensory overload. If you can get a text transcript, use that instead of video or audio 4) really don't expose yourself unless necessary.

I think there's a serious way that trans Twitter engages with hate material as a form of self harm. There's obviously a degree to which we're all anxious about the risks of turning a blind eye to these developments in hate movements, and it makes it hard to just ignore it.

That is precisely why it's useful for groups doing research on hate stuff, rather than saying "hey guys, look at this" to produce a digest of that material that people can refer to, pass on to others, and ideally avoid exposing yourself to unnecessary stress everyone reading...

...the same hate and effectively amplifying the harm it does to everyone's mental health. Like, if someone has done a blog post or info pack explaining a hate campaign at most only a few people will need to double check what it claims if that makes sense.

Another really common recommendation is to limit emotive stuff in contact with material that is going to be distressing. This can help reduce the wider impact. In this sense, going "woooooahhhh guys this is sooolooo baaaaad" could make things a lot worse. I'm guilty of this too.

I can't stress enough, one way to minimise your contact with hate material is to just stop looking at it. Are you doing something productive with your time looking at it? Are you just stressing yourself out? It seems unlikely for most people.

If all the new information you are getting from continuing further is "Wow these people really hate us and may in fact be trying to find ways to hurt us"... You know that already right? You don't need more of that signal.

Put it down, let it go, save the link in a file if you need to and go do something that *gives* you something useful instead.

(fwiw, I'm muting this thread, I'm sure you're very tough and don't need your hand holding around transphobic bullshit. Good for you you don't need to tell me about it)
