Our thoughts and prayers are with our law enforcement brothers and sisters of the Bay St. Louis, Mississippi Police Department, as two of their officers were killed in the line of duty this morning.

Ella's mother spoke directly to the straw purchaser, saying that while he "didn't pull the trigger, what gives you the right to deserve anything less than the max?" Ms. French is the epitome of strength and we will always be here to support her and honor Ella.

Had it not been for this straw purchase, we would still have Ella with us today, Officer Carlos Yanez Jr. would still be an active officer, and Officer Joshua Blas would still be patrolling with his partner. Ella's mother, Elizabeth French, would still have her daughter.

Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott spoke after the sentencing to reiterate that although we respect the court's decision, we wholeheartedly disagree.

#ChicagoPolice members packed a federal courtroom today to call for justice for fallen hero Officer Ella French, her mother Elizabeth and everyone who knew and loved her. We called for the maximum sentence for the straw purchaser who bought the gun used to kill Ella.

On 12/11/2022, Citywide Community Safety Team Beat 7662B conducted a traffic stop in @ChicagoCAPS11 resulting in this Taurus G3 9mm semi-automatic handgun equipped with a laser sight and extended magazine being recovered. Felony charges were approved. Great job officers!

An officer then deployed a taser and the offender lunged, striking an officer in the shoulder & head with a knife. An officer then discharged his weapon, striking the offender, who was taken to a hospital, arrested, & charged accordingly.

In order to get the man somewhere warm and safe, FTO Ballesteros & Officer Sanchez quickly began working to find transportation. The man’s electric wheelchair, however, did not fit in their squad car and accessible transportation was hours away.

So, the officers pushed the man to the 11th District station, almost a mile away from their location, and then paid for an accessible ride share to help him get back home. They then followed behind to assist the resident and ensure he got home safely.
