listening to, live tweeting, and photographing someone's private conversation for literal hours is the kind of thing you should be able to press charges against

also i've seen people saying "well the couple was ok with being outed by the media and the thread itself so??" which good for them but i want to live in a society where we operate on the assumption that strangers don't want their private conversations turned into viral content

the girl in this story was harassed off the internet after being doxxed, and meanwhile the poster is looking to flip this into a job with buzzfeed. this entire saga has aged me ten years https://twitter.com/roseybeeme/status/1014667854594048000 …

To play devils advocate. Do we have an expectation of privacy in public spaces?
-
we have an expectation that people might overhear our conversations, not that people will actively listen in and photograph to make for viral social media content to distribute to the world
-
We would be better off if we had NO expectation of privacy. Then when need arise, intentionally create privacy. (Closer to reality)
-
How do you do that on an airplane? There isn't really any way.
-
It bothered me more bc it was an airplane. I feel like the social contracts surrounding air travel involve pretending not to notice most of what's going on around you.
-
My thoughts exactly. There's no space, and we're all kind of uncomfortable. No need to add to it.

And the media tracked them down too. There's a full Buzzfeed article about it and the people were identified.

I felt the same seeing all the attention the thread got. It was kinda cute at first but didn’t take long to feel invasive and weird.
-
Yeah, the first tweet was okay, but then the pictures and the narrating their entire interaction just got creepier and creepier.
-
I agree. The first tweet was cute. Had it ended with “they seemed to get along and exchanged numbers” it would have been fine. But that’s not what happened. The invasion of privacy with glee creeped me out.
-
I think the pile-on of replies demanding updates provided a lot of social pressure, but there didn't seem to be much resistance. Or empathy.
