Whoever is active on the ground can steer the political process in a direction that is favorable to them. So, if the US isn’t there it risks losing its leverage and leaves it wide open for Russia to play an increasingly influential role in Syria and elsewhere in the region. 2/3

US policy towards Syria is heading towards prioritizing Iran and having Syria as a sub-component of its Iran strategy. So, the visits we’re seeing to the region this week fall under the umbrella of reassuring US allies mainly about Iran. 3/3
