I was on a range firing a mini flare and I realized my hand span was too small to perform the recognized firing procedure - In order to accommodate women in the army, we need to remove these subtle barriers to integration, says Major Heloise Goodleypic.twitter.com/DOfh4V8hKZ

The key thing - Heloise then realised that she could fire the flare another way - showing innovation, flexibility and increasing collective resilience #womeninthemilitary

        Or she showed common sense??

Exactly - not really something we should be praising as we should expect it, especially from somebody with the rank of major. The absence of common sense, though is something to be criticised. The points were valid though and expressed without hyperbole some issues will arise

that was badly phrased - i thought she raised valid points and I would assume her experience will be one of many. As she says the military needs to absorb and adapt when these issues are identified

What was she doing firing a mini flare on the range? Aren't they only meant to be fired in your office or whilst sitting in a canoe in the mess swimming pool?

Some may want to understand and analyze the overall issue as opposed to focusing in on the anecdote. Good work Heloise.

Adapt, improvise, innovate and overcome. This has nothing to do with a ‘male dominated culture’. Just adopt good drills that work rather than shouting ‘gender inequality’

Really? If this is what it comes down to, then it’s really not so bad is it. How about addressing the important issues, like the fact that the cleaners tend to use ladies toilets as the store cupboard. Not so much obstacle as obstacle course. Just sayin’

Soldiers must always be able to improvise, adapt and be fluid in their approach to tasks, whether it be firing flares developing battle plans or management changes.
