We’re taking a big leap of faith assuming that a nuclear agreement is where we're headed, but hypothetically reaching such an agreement does not necessarily preclude human rights being the next issue on the table. It's not either/or, it might be a question of sequencing.

Most experts would agree that Trump is not an exception here – in previous talks about nuclear weapons, human rights has typically fallen off the table.

It would be very difficult at this moment to press Kim on human rights and expect him to then give on the nuclear issue, which isn't to say the language should be taken off the table, that the principle shouldn't be there, and that the documentation shouldn't be there.

I would embrace a strategy of principled pragmatism; you've got to have a very clear view of what you can achieve. If you are going to work with a leader (regime change is a very risky proposition), you have to accept certain limitations -
