My understanding is that hunters are the minority, handgun and assault rifle enthusiasts the majority, is this mistaken?

Nothing there re hunting vs other uses but yes, most guns owned by relatively small number of stockpiling super owners

I had in mind industry shift away from hunters to "defense"-oriented handgun & assault rifle enthusiastshttps://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/06/22/business/assault-rifles-and-concealed-handguns-at-center-of-a-changing-industry.html?referer=https://www.google.ca/ …

Sorry, that's BS. It's all part of the same thing. Every day people die in America die from guns. And, honestly, most of that is not AR-15s. Gun culture is largely toxic, and must be defeated altogether.

It's not a mistake to call out gratuitous violence culture though or proliferation by the arms industry all across the globe (and our economic dependence on it). In fact, it's hypocritical not to get into some of these root problems.

Hunting may have utilitarian applications, but it is never "sport."
