Pick up a good bilingual anthology (playing the odds, as a
@SanAntonioDSA'r you might have some Spanish)... his Vida del Buscón picaresque novel is OK but not in same league as Lazarillo de Tormes, an eternal masterpiece which you should buy yourself for Xmas.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
I'd go with this edition--https://www.amazon.com/Life-Lazarillo-Tormes-Nyrb-Classics/dp/1590171322 … then read Francisco Rico's short book on the p.o.v. in the picaresque novel. The picaresque novel is one of the essential inventions for human progress. But I digress now…

Much appreciated recommendation. Excited bookworm over here. You are right on your odds about the Spanish, but because I’m from Panama, luckily surrounded by Spanish in SA, so I maintain it! I’ll buy the bilingual version of one of these works today!

Going to be a challenge. Tried reading some Cortazar in the original Spanish and had trouble with his poetics, but I also think I invited the difficulty by choosing a non-linear, very ethereal, post-modern text! Looking forward to difficult practice.

Oh I recommend Lazarillo in English (at least for first reading)… 16th c Castillian is no breeze…
