There’s a great @EyalPress article from ~20 years (!) back on the tortuous politics of formally classifying the Khmer Rouge genocide a genocide. In the old Lingua Franca, whose contents cry out to be digitized!https://twitter.com/ChaseMadar/status/1063430659216207873 …

Noted in passing is what a small percentage of the Khmer Rouge’s organized slaughter meets the idiosyncratic and surprisingly narrow legal definition of genocide https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/15/world/asia/khmer-rouge-cambodia-genocide.html …

It basically a dialogue on the idiosyncratic definition. Some intriguing liberal criticisms of Lemkin

Many thanks, and fully share the grief that the wondrous contents of LF are not (fully) digitized.

Prof. Herman and Chomsky particularly pointed to the different treatment of the atrocities committed in Cambodia, by enemies, and in Indonesia, by allies.

In Manufacturing Consent, there is an analysis of the way this term is used in the media. The result is the same as of the @FAIRmediawatch study on the use of the term 'regime.' The mainstream media is far more likely to apply it to official enemies and their atrocities.
