this web site is hell today for anyone who is aware of valid interpretations of the first world war beyond lenin's and blackadder's
Any chance you might recommend a good book or article on WWI historiographic controversy and struggle?

a single volume would be difficult, but to complement what you've read already maybe try hew strachan's first world war - vol. 1, not the single-volume version

Am guessing you saw this but in case not—https://promarket.org/inequality-imperialism-first-world-war/ …

I saw branko's thesis mentioned but haven't read it yet. and definitely didn't see the discussion on "http://promarket.com " which I'm sure will be full of compliments :)

having read just this blog post I think this is interesting data, but branko is right not to draw many conclusions from it. I mean they can't even distinguish between foreign assets held in other european countries vs. colonies/abroad so hard to say anything about "imperialism"
-
also pet peeve here but their description of their work is that they depend on "recently available data" which makes it sound like they did epic archival work. in fact (looking at the paper) they're citing historians' studies going back decades

I found Chris Clark’s Sleepwalkers (v anti-Fischer, no?) persuasive but am coming in with little context
-
clark is better than reductionist lenin-type accounts but achieves a similar general thesis. he also doesn't give enough room to fischer-type histories. imo a lot of the book's success was due to marketing

Sean McMeecan’s Russian Origins of the First World War is fascinating and convincing
-
clark goes over the "russian origins" thesis as well, and is generally a better historian than mcmeekin, although I don't fully buy into him either
