Weird and sad that many Italian-Americans, most of whom stem from the impoverished South, have invested so much emotion into Christopher Columbus, of all people. I’m all for a national Italian-American holiday but why not celebrate good things from the Mezzogiorno instead?

For instance, did you know that Sicily, population ~5 million, has produced two Nobel Prize winners for literature? Not to mention Leonardo Sciascia, top of my list for shoulda-been-Nobeled, and Lampedusa.
