As a public defender, I invite you to come watch any busy arraignment shift to see just how little evidence society needs to destroy people every day. Feel free to advocate for a better criminal justice system with that nice perch you've got.https://twitter.com/secupp/status/1043853162153746432 …

As a Public Defender, your a primary reason for how screwed up the system is. Stand up and do your job instead of encouraging plea bargains.

Wrong. As public defenders we are there as a check on the prosecutors denying people their rights - including yours!

One generalization doesn't deserve another. I was a prosecutor for 10 years and I didn't run around denying people's rights. And I loved public defenders, even when we (often) disagreed. They were in the system because they wanted it to work, which was the same reason I was there

Most defenders I know *don't* want the system to work, because the system working, by design, means terrible things happen for our clients.

I think they thought the system worked when their clients were acquitted, or when they talked me into dumping the charge prior to trial. Both happened periodically. I had and still have a tremendous amount of respect for the public defenders I knew then and know now.

- The original statement that prompted this discussion was oversimplified. There are good & bad prosecutors & defenders in the system, but there are systemic issues that both face, which happen at the expense of (poor) defendants.

The amount of legal defense is directly related to what one can afford. Most of the public can not afford private counsel and get ramroded in court. In my professional career, I rarely ever came across an inmate who had a fair defense and trial. Money should not play into defense

so you blame public defenders for their offices being inadequately funded and staffed?
