Something I learned this morning reading a fantastic book called Capitol Men is that South Carolina farmers became so good at growing rice because they selectively kidnapped West Africans who were expert rice growers. Without their knowledge there would have been no rice.

This is a book about the first Black congressmen, elected after the civil war during reconstruction. These days I'm so drawn to reading about reconstruction and the white supremacist backlash against it.

I’m all ears if you have the urge to tweet out your top 5 readings on this period... I just finally read McPherson’s Battle Cry and am now steaming into Reconstruction... got a good tutorial at a bar last night on the perversion of the 24th Amendment in the Slaughterhouse Cases
