But here's the thing: either "overriding the will of the people" is a thing, or it isn't. If a decision is wrong in its application of the constitution, it's wrong. But applying the constitution often involves overriding things that were voted on or enacted by elected leaders.

Not if you assume it doesn't! This is a classic centrist move: both right & left are symmetric deviations from the sanity of the center. And you prove it by assuming it and then saying things are symmetrical. It's very convincing to those who believe.
