I've seen a white woman cry irl because she was sad about a plan to change the name of a school named after a slaver. I support this, and expect loads of resistance locally.https://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2018/06/04/faneuil-hall-slave-name/ …

Ugh, I know the type. Even in the relatively enlightened Cleveland suburb I grew up in, the neighbor circulating a petition to "keep Chief Wahoo"…

I heard some truly astonishing shit at this meeting. Not good. At one point a man said it's unfair to judge Devotion because there were good slavers and bad, and who knows if he was good or bad. Audible gasps and condemnations for that one.

You missed the pro-Columbus day statements at the last Town Meeting. (And what if the guy who argued slippery slope, and said Andrew Jackson could be next. Yes, please!) Proud to say after everyone had their say @TownofBrookline voted overwhelmingly & correctly.

Grateful to @cscottnet for being one of 31 Town Meeting members who voted to stop #Brookline from imposing Non-Disclosure Agreements as a condition of settling suits for discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Unfortunately the Warrant Article wasn’t passed..

Tommy and Tony were discussing the WA afterward and seemed to have ideas on how to achieve the anti-NDA aims while keeping control of publicity in the hands of the victim. I also heard support for publishing a settlement breakdown in the Town annual report.

I do not believe victims request the NDAs in Brookline lawsuits for discrimination, retaliation and harassment. I believe the idea of “privacy” was used to defeat the Warrant Article, and that you won’t see this issue addressed in any substantive way by the people you mention.

To repeat part of my statement to the AC Subcommittee and full AC, the decision to come forward and report discrimination and harassment involves weighing the benefits of relinquishing “privacy.” We understand that reporting may involve the media, the judicial system, etc.

No victim breaks silence and reports these crimes thinking, “No one will ever know.” NDAs protect abusers and the systems which protect them.

That is most certainly the case for Dawn Churchill, whose reported abuser was married to then-Town Counsel of Brookline. MCAD found probable cause of discrimination and Brookline recently paid Churchill $231,000.00 to settle. After reporting discrimination Churchill was fired.
