1/ I think Effective Altruism is one of the best things to happen to philanthropy in a long time. But I don’t think it’s how to do the most good.

Wouldn't the conclusion be that donations in general are a not very E form of A, but if they were more concentrated on int'l charities, then they would be? You may be correct, but how do you conclude that improving gov't does more per dollar than giving to int'l charities?

Agree philanthropy would do more good if it was allocated better (that’s why I like EA). But EA is optimizing a tiny, relatively fixed pie. It’s like trying to reduce climate change by improving the efficiency of go-karts.

Your q about gov is interesting. I wonder if ppl have data on e.g. how much of improvements like increased life expectancy are due to gov vs biz vs nonprofits. Not sure how you’d know. But seems logical given size that govs impact many, many more people than nonprofits.

My interpretation of EA is that all it cares about is doing the most good per unit of money, time, effort and isn't wedded to NGO donations. If you can demonstrate that such resources are better spent on gov't and business, I think you can shift the EA crowd's attention there.

I think EA shouldn't be understood as limited to philanthropy! Here's an example of 80k hours, a pretty mainstream place for EA thought, debating the pros & cons of being a Congressional Staffer:https://80000hours.org/career-reviews/congressional-staffer/?source=email&uni_id=272&utm_source=80%2C000+Hours+mailing+list&utm_campaign=4bb844c678-Annual_impact_survey_appeal_2_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_43bc1ae55c-4bb844c678-351735901 …
