In US, average MRI costs $1k. In Japan, it’s set at $105 by the government and providers compete on margin. This led providers to go to Toshiba and demand an inexpensive MRI scanner. MRI scanners in Japan now cost $150k, 10% of the cost in the US. Regulation drove innovation.

Driving is absurd. We hurl ourselves at 60mph in a metal missile burning dead algae and the main thing preventing instant death is trusting the thousands of strangers driving the other way not to accidentally turn their steering wheel a few inches in wrong directing.

I wish Twitter would let anyone get verified (ie verify they are a real person) and then allow me to toggle between a Twitter that’s only verified accounts and one that’s all accounts. My guess is I’d spend >80% of time on verified Twitter.

I recently moved across the country and I'm shocked at how many things break. Banking, insurance, car registration, etc. As people become more mobile, fixing this problem is a big opportunity. I'd happily pay to avoid this admin nightmare.

Thinking gov could work better is prob one of the few issues w bipartisan support. I’d consider voting for an independent candidate whose entire platform was to reform gov / the political process. Fix the machine, then we can all go back to voting on what to use it for.

Code is expensive. Code breaks. Code has bugs. Code has security risks. Code needs to be maintained. If you can do something without code, do it without code.

There are now systems where people can build organisations that have no company, no official names of people and yet anyone on earth can own a stake in them, get paid out fairly, contribute, build on top of them and none of it exists anywhere within current legal structures.

If Bitcoin doesn’t have commodity value, why will it succeed when no other natural money in history has succeeded without commodity value? There were tons of opps for free markets to agree that some useless thing was a better money than eg gold. Why is this time different? End/

So what is Bitcoin? Seems obvious to me it’s more like natural money than paper money. But if so, does it have any commodity value beyond being money? Eg is the Bitcoin blockchain intrinsically valuable outside of powering bitcoin as money? 4/

Paper money is not natural. It only works because govs make it work. Eg the US gov mandated that people accept greenbacks and they still use legal / violent force to protect the dollar. AFAIK no paper money has ever come out of a free market. 3/

Natural money gets value from the free market. People freely choose to use gold and silver. All natural money has intrinsic value beyond being money. Eg gold is useful for making jewelry. Even if people stop using it as money, the price won’t drop below the commodity price. 2/

Is Bitcoin natural money and does it have commodity value? Can anyone recommend reading on this subject? 1/

Over half of Liberia lives on less than $2 per day. In 2018, inflation was 23%, meaning everything from clothing to rice cost *23% more* than the year before. Meanwhile, US inflation was 1.9%. Money is this big invisible thing that works for the rich while keeping the poor poor.

I hope we end up with decentralized infrastructure that guarantees users own their money and data, on top of which most people use centralized apps for convenience. The decentralized infrastructure will guarantee users can exit with $ and data if the apps turn bad or evil.

It's easy to ridicule overconfidence. And indeed, it has its disadvantages. But it's just what you need if you want to take on a problem most rational people would conclude was too hard. Fools dare where angels fear to tread, and sometimes they win.
