In the United States, there are an estimated 500,000 homeless youth, over 40% identify as LGBTQ. Once homeless, LGBTQ youth are more likely to experience violence on the streets, mental health issues, HIV infection, substance use and tragically, suicidal thoughts.
Today I was delighted to serve meals at @AliForneyCenter which is the nations leading provider of services for these young people. Each year they serve over 170,000 meals. This is America’s dirty secret. I’ve worked at shelters helping these kids and they need so much support. Some sources put the numbers closer to 1M homeless youth. I’m so grateful you’re already using your high profile to raise awareness on this issue. Thank you, Chasten.

The statistic is horrifying alone but if you imagine every1 of these people as individuals the heartache is unbearable. It pains me to see how we fail our kids. As parents we promise an unconditional love to kids. I am livid that some parents attach footnotes to their love.

To be homeless is frightening, lonely and uncertain. To not know if the night will be safe, to not know if there will be a meal. Add mental illness and
“voices,” and/or hallucinations, creates an almost untenable existence and unimaginable suffering. Empathy, compassion and a supportive social support system are badly needed.
The difference this campaign alone is making in the lives of the LGBTQ community is monumental. Thank you.

This is why I think @PeteButtigieg candidacy is so important. A role model for so many and a bright light for us all.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we implemented early education for all, that teaches humans cannot choose how we are born. That our sexuality is a mere biological trait. Perhaps once people learn that we can’t choose said trait, we could save millions of #LGBTQ2 youth.
