This really highlights the extent to which Fridays in Parliament have been treated like a game MPs play among themselveshttps://twitter.com/BBCPolitics/status/1008333545486606336 …

MPs have a no-win choice on PMB Fridays: be in London & be accused of neglecting constituency duties, or be in the constituency and be accused of... yep, you guessed it...

Or, just maybe, stay in parliament until close of play Friday, then go home and take care of constituents? Show me another employee who can decide not to be at work *every friday* even though business is running.

The point is, no one really clarifies what is 'work' - sitting in the chamber is much less hard work than a full-on constituency day of surgeries... so is that 'work'? Most MPs never get 'that Friday feeling' as they work all weekend as well as all week.

My point is it's disingenuous for MPs to decry Chope for being in parliament to block a vote when they could have been there to stop him doing so.

I'm struck that the "job" of MP is completely undefined in terms of responsibilities. An MP could literally do nothing for their constituents, stick to the party line and thrive.

1/2 Not in a marginal seat. But I do think the job needs more clarity: role & responsibilities, hours etc. Depressing number of ppl think MPs are only 'working' when sitting in the chamber, & that recess is 'holiday'.

Completely agree on the point about clarity btw. MP is one of the few professions needing no qualifications, and having no defined responsibilities or even working hours. MPs totally on their own honour - a trait lacking in many imo.

I suspect Honour lacking in far fewer than you might think. Most MPs dedicated individuals. But I found the system MPs operate in has odd way of making Parliament far less than the sum of its parts.

Forgive me if I've given the wrong impression, I know from personal experience my MP is very dedicated to her constituents. But some are a disgrace to the name, and seemingly ennobled despite of it.

the parliament of Jersey (the States Assembly) is due to debate in July whether to have a formal statement of Members' duties. We plan a post about it for our blog @HansardSociety - watch this space

I disagree, unless I'm very mistaken an MP could be elected then spend 5 years doing nothing. They wouldn't get elected next time but they've collected nearly half a million in salary in that time.
