When did we start habitually opening sentences with "So..." ? Does it really add anything? Why have we started doing it? Language developments are fascinating.

... about 5 years ago then?! ( I was going to say "so about 5 years... " but got all self-conscious...)

Haha, well that was an educated guess, it's certainly been going on for a few years and was annoying at the time and still is.

Ha! Agreed Charlotte!! So, it's like when we started calling TV programmes 'shows' - from Corrie to King Lear - and series 'seasons'. Evolution of speech 🗯️

I think a lot of it comes from the US shows being shown in the UK. “So”, “like”, etc., picked up by everyone now. I’ve given up trying to teach friends the difference between “sitting” and “sat” and “standing” and “stood”. Not sure language development is progress or not though.

So, when I used to teach I insisted that students avoided beginning sentences (verbal or oral) with so. I said it was so worthy of detention. “So what?” said one.

So, I open sentences with “So...” a lot when I’m writing academic papers. Now questioning why🤔
